FAQs
What is the Galway Giving Tree program?
The Galway Giving Tree is a program that works in conjunction with local businesses and charities to collect Christmas gifts for Galway children and adults who would otherwise go without.
What makes the Galway Giving Tree program different?
We find out what the recipient wants so that gift givers know they are giving something that will be really appreciated. That connection between gift-giver and recipient is the core strength of the program.
The program is also convenient as you just leave your gift under the tree at your registered Host Business (typically your workplace/educational institution) and we collect the gifts from there.
Does GGT provide the Christmas trees?
Galway Giving Tree provides wish-tags only for you to hang on your office/organization Christmas tree. Alternatively you can pin tags to a cork board or display on a table.
How do I sign up as a Galway Giving Tree Host (i.e. Host Business)?
It's easy! Contact us expressing your interest. Please note that we only work with businesses that are within a 5 mile radius of Galway as we have limited resources and the collection, sorting and distribution of gifts all happens in one day.
Where can I pick up a tag?
Tags are typically accessible only to staff at the Host Business company but we also have commercial premises registered as Host Businesses. Check our ‘Host Businesses’ page for details.
The wish item I selected is out of stock and I can’t buy it. What should I do?
If you can't find the item requested, then use it as a guideline to buy something similar. Please write the description of the new item on the wish tag.
My business is outside the 5 mile limit for collection but I still want to take part. Is that possible?
We limit Host Businesses to within 5 miles of the city centre as we don't have the resources to cover an extended area on our (one day only) collection. If you are not associated with a Host Business but still want to take part, check our ‘Host Businesses’ page as there may be public facing Host Businesses (e.g. shops, hospitals) where you can pick up a tag.
Does the Galway Giving Tree accept cash donations?
No, we do not accept cash donations. Neither will we ever phone you to try to elicit cash from you. We have built up relationships with our sponsors and will never 'cold call' asking for money. Please be vigilant for bogus callers.
What happens to ‘wish tags’ that are not selected?
When the wishes are first gathered, each 'wish' is printed onto no more than two tags. These are then sent to different hosts to give the best chance of all wishes being fulfilled. People whose wishes are not selected may not get their first choice but will still get a gift. Unused 'wish tags' will be collected from their Hosts along with the gifts.
Is there an upper price limit to gifts?
The limit (which agencies are informed of in advance) is 30 euro. Wishes over this amount are rejected. The average gift cost is 17 euro.
I selected a tag and the item looks expensive.
All wishes are reviewed to ensure they are available for less than 30 euro. We typically check Argos and Smyths Toys when reviewing prices. Some items, e.g. remote control cars, have a broad price range so while you may see expensive versions of them, the item can be found for less than 30 euro.
How can I help as a sponsor?
Our program is completely volunteer based. Although our running costs are low, we rely on sponsors to help us keep the program running. As a sponsor, you can assist us by donating space, office supplies, transport or money. Every cent we receive is put towards the program. Please drop us a line if you think you can help.
