Frequently Asked Questions

Q?
What is the Giving Tree programme?
A.
The Giving Tree is a scheme that works in conjunction with local businesses and charities to collect Christmas gifts for Galway children and adults who would otherwise go without. Read more.
Q?
Where can I pick up a tag?
A.
Click the 'Our Hosts' tab on our website to see the list of businesses that are participating as 'Host Businesses'.  Please keep in mind that many of the trees will not be accessible to the public as they are intended for employees only.
Q?
Does the Galway Giving Tree accept cash donations?
A.
No, we do not accept cash donations.  Neither will we ever phone you to try to elicit either cash or sponsorship from you.  We have built up relationships with our sponsors and will never 'cold call' asking for money.  Please be viligant for bogus callers.
Q?
How do I sign up as a Giving Tree 'Host' (i.e. Host Business)?
A.
It's easy! Contact us expressing your interest.  Please note that we only work with businesses that are within a 5 mile radius of Galway as we have limited resources and the collection, sorting and distribution of gifts all happens in one day.
Q?
What social service agencies do you work with?
A.
The Galway Giving Tree can work with multiple different agencies (i.e. local charities) from year to year, depending on what agencies are interested in taking part. To see this years agencies please click the 'Agencies' tab on our website.
Q?
How can my agency take part?
A.
Simply contact us expressing your interest.
Q?
What happens to 'wish tags' that are not selected?
A.
When the wishes are first gathered, each 'wish' is printed onto no more than two tags. These are then sent to different hosts to give the best chance of all wishes being fulfilled. Children whose wishes are not selected may not get their first choice but will still get a gift. Unused 'wish tags' will be collected from their Hosts along with the gifts.
Q?
Is there an upper price limit to gifts?
A.
The limit (which agencies are informed of in advance) is 25 euro. Wishes over this amount are rejected. The average gift cost is 17 euro.
Q?
I selected a tag and the item looks expensive.
A.
All wishes are reviewed to ensure they are available for less than 25 euro.  We typically check Argos and Smyths Toys when reviewing prices.  Some items, e.g. remote control cars, have a broad price range so while you may see expensive versions of them, the item can be found for less than 25 euro.
Q?
The wish item I selected is out of stock and I can't buy it.  What should I do?
A.
If you can't find the item requested, then use it as a guideline to buy something similar.  Or, if you prefer, you can return that tag to the tree and select a different tag.
Q?
When did the Galway Giving Tree start?
A.
Please see our organization's history or read more about what we do.
Q?
How can I help as a sponsor?
A.
Our program is completely volunteer based. Although our running costs are low, we rely on sponsors to help us keep the program running. As a sponsor, you can assist us by donating space, office supplies, transport or money. Every cent we receive is put towards the program. Please drop us a line if you think you can help.
