A Simple Idea...

The Galway Giving Tree was founded in 2010 by Florinda Green. It is based on a charity she encountered in her workplace in California called the 'Family Giving Tree'. The 'Family Giving Tree', which has been running since 1990, has successfully delivered over a million presents to children in need since it began. The idea was so simple and so effective that many years later, Florinda wondered if it would work in Galway. In 2010, she contacted a few businesses and gave the program a test run, collecting items in her car. It was only 100 items but it was proof that the idea worked!

In 2012, Florinda ran the program again, this time with the help of her husband, Chris, and the sponsorship of Storm Technology. With more hosts involved, almost 600 gifts were collected and word started to spread about the Galway Giving Tree.

The following year, Imelda (who had taken part as a host business previously) came on board to help to run and grow the program.  With sponsorship from Boston Scientific, space to sort the gifts donated by Barons Self Storage, and a team of elf volunteers, almost 1000 gifts were collected from 21 businesses. In 2014, with more amazing support from the Galway community and our fantastic sponsors, we collected almost 1600 gifts!

There is something very personal about fulfilling these wishes. For instance, here is a tag for a 4 year old girl who just wants shoes for Christmas. When people see these wishes their hearts melt. The direct connection between the person giving and the child is the  core strength of the programme.

In 2018, Fintan came on board to assist with running the growing program.  Then in 2019 amidst further challenges, the GGT Committee was formed to oversee and administer the program and start planning for the future.
